First Readers help writers out by reading their pre-publication drafts and offering feedback. You don’t have to be a pro, a writer, an editor or anything of the sort – you just have to enjoy reading and be willing to offer your thoughts about what you read. For example I just finished a 4.5k word short story that needs some First Reader love, “Shiver”. Here is the opening:
“The dark sea lifted him up once more; only this time the moonlight broke from the strangling cloud cover and revealed the undulating waters before him. Adrift, his legs moving with just enough energy to keep him afloat, he thought he was living a plane crash survivor’s worst nightmare. That was when he saw them, dotting the crests and valleys of the black water, their pale, corpse-like hide dully reflecting the light from above… a shiver of sharks.”
If you are interested in helping out, or just would like to read the story for fun, shoot me a message/leave a comment with your email address and I will zip the draft over to you. Thanks!
